Iceland Vs. England: The View From A Reykjavík Living Room

As the near-mythical saga of the Icelandic football team continued last night, it was documented once again by Grapevine illustrator Lóa. As regular readers might know, a Lóa illustration is worth 10,000 words (yep, she’s that good). Her quickdraw commentary of the Iceland Vs. England match at Euro 2016 (henceforth known Brexit 2—The Smiting) is a quintessential component of understanding exactly what went down.

For those of you who weren’t following her rapid-fire commentary in real-time via Grapevine’s Instagram, we’ve done you a solid and compiled the drawings below for your viewing pleasure.

Hello again. I’m having some technical difficulties. #euro2016 #isleng #engisl #rvkgrapevine #livefeed #loaboratorium #áframísland

Much like the actual game, Lóa had a bit of her own rough start.

I guess this is what I missed. Sport people not knowing their national anthem. #áframísland #loaboratorium #livefeed #rvkgrapevine #engisl #isleng #euro2016

Just a ruse to throw off the English. Obviously they know their national anthem …

1-1 but it’s only been like 10 minutes! What is happening?! #isleng #engisl #rvkgrapevine #livefeed #loaboratorium #euro2016

Those first ten minutes; what a doozy.

This guy is probably a dreamboat in someones eyes. What’s his name? #áframísland #engisl #rvkgrapevine #livefeed #loaboratorium #euro2016

Please, we know dreamboats. And their names all end in son’s. (Or, in rare occasions when sen is also permissible.)

Give it a rest Rooney. (Also, longsleeves in this heat, odd decision) #euro2016 #loaboratorium #livefeed #rvkgrapevine #engisl #áframísland

The man knows how to give a performance (but we hear the critics deem them all flops).

The whole country banded together (there had to be forty, fifty people out there on that hill).

England’s Harry Kane couldn’t do much with that free-kick. (Can you blame him? Just look at the intimidating countenance he faced.)
